MUST VISIT SITES
IFURU UTHURU THILA
Level: Open Water
Distance from Joali Maldives: 45 minutes by dhoni
This dive site is one of the most stunning dive sites east of the Raa atoll. This thila is about 60 metres long and 50 metres wide, with many caves and overhangs covered with colourful soft corals and some fan corals. Here you will find a school of bannerfish, red snapper, black snapper, rainbow runner, grey reef shark, and stingrays. On the south side of the thila, you’ll find slopes of amazing hard coral. The current can be strong sometimes, as it is in the channel, you must be an experienced diver to enjoy this dive site.
KOTTEFARU KUDA THILA
Level: Open Water
Distance from Joali Maldives: 60 minutes by dhoni
Located on the southeast edge of the Raa atoll, is Kottefaru Kuda Thila, a dive site with spectacular topography. If you start the dive on the west side, you’ll find huge and beautiful overhangs, as you go along, you’ll see a wall full of colourful soft corals, mysterious-looking terraces with small caves, and an amazing canyon. This place is a perfect location to see some grey reef sharks, tuna, and jackfish. On top of the thila, you will see plenty of juvenile reef fish among anemones and more colourful soft corals.
LABYRINTH
Level: Open Water
Distance from Joali Maldives: 50 minutes by dhoni
The Labyrinth is a dive site in the middle of a wide channel. The top is made up of huge flat boulders, up to 12 metres, where you’ll occasionally spot some tuna passing by. As you descend and swim along the magnificent canyons formed below, you’ll find colourful soft corals and schools of fish such as striped snappers, humpback snappers, red snappers, jackfish, and many more. This canyon is full of life and is suitable even for beginner divers.
